Woodfired West Pop-up Grill – Porthmeor Beach, St Ives.
From Cornish waters and Cornish land to everyone’s mouths and everyone’s hands! It’s not very often that you go out to eat and get to see your food before it’s cooked, let alone have a chat with your chef about the cooking process, where the food is sourced and what flavours you can expect on the night!
Let head chef and founder Ben Quinn, welcome you into the cafe and answer any questions you may have about the menu – or to be honest, anything else you might like to talk about really! Ben and his team are all super friendly and are, lets say… very happy to chat! They’re all extremely knowledgeable as well, so let them talk you through the food, menu and the reason they host like they do. The team are sure to ease you in gently to their all new eating experience in Cornwall.
Ben and his wife Sam, have developed a team that have the same ethos and vision as them, which certainly shows when they’re working together. Although its a very relaxed team atmosphere, it is lovely that everyone is working towards the same goal and care about the food and the eating experience for everyone that is involved.
Woodfired West invites foodies and friends, to have the opportunity to share and create memories around their dinner tables together as one community. Everyone is seated on mixed tables and are served the same dishes from the exclusive one-off menu. Everyone is also served at the same time. The menus change very regularly, dependant on the season, availability and chefs inspiration of the week. You could have Cornish mussels one week and toasted peaches the next. That’s what’s great about this sort of dining experience, its ever changing and super innovative!
Ben and Sam, of Woodfired West are hugely passionate about good food and creating a wonderful eating experience for locals and visitors that are similarly as passionate about eating fresh, flavoursome food. Head to Woodfired West for locally sourced meat, fish and vegetables all cooked on their awesome Drumbecue, for a truly authentic wood-fired taste.
Whilst we were at Woodfireded West we devoured fresh Cornish Mackerel escabeche, St Ives bakery focaccia, burnt tomatoes, whole grilled mackerel, stuffed aubergine, Cornish new potatoes and courgette trifolati. Again we opted for trying the fish dish and the vegetarian dish and both were a big hit! Cooking everything on coals just makes everything that little bit more delicious. It makes me reminisce about family BBQ’s on Godrevy beach.
Along with the wonderful food at Woodfired West, the cafe itself is beautiful. Its fresh white walls, chunky wooden tables and light and airy atmosphere goes hand-in-hand with its absolutely breathtaking view of Porthmeor beach. Whilst listening to the waves roll in and smelling your food being cooked, you will find yourself easily lost in thought while gazing out to sea. It is most definitely one of St Ives’ best cafe views, thats for sure!
The menu’s for Woodfired West are not published in advance, but you can choose a standard or vegetarian option before hand. Go with an open mind to trying things and you’re sure to have a fabulous evening!
