One of the most exciting sporting events you’ll ever see on a beach, is almost here and it’s on Cornwall’s very own, Watergate Bay! It is the much anticipated return of polo on the beach.

Slip on your white trousers, statement sunglasses and Joules polo and head on down to one of Cornwall’s most glamorous beachside events.

This annual weekend is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and has some fabulous hosts sponsoring it. The main sponsor is Suffolk’s own Aspall who have been creating cyder since 1728.  Make sure you enjoy a few of their delicious cyders or juices in the sun. Assisting Aspall as sponsors are, the fabulous Joules, Jacquart Champagne, Tarquin’s Dry Gin, Treleaven’s Ice Cream and Becky Bettesworth Seaside Prints.

The two main polo matches are on Friday and Saturday evening chukka-ing off at 6.30pm. If you’ve never watched polo but fancy attending, fear not, the link below has a guide to the rules along with player and pony profiles!

How the weekend runs…

Friday 19th May – 6.30pm – TRELEAVENS Trophy Match

Saturday 20th May – 6.30om – ASPALL Trophy Match

During the day there are many family friendly events and food stalls to visit. On Friday there are Segway taster sessions and also Segway polo to watch. The Food and drink stalls include local traders such as Craftworks and Big Pan Parties.

Hosted by the stunning, Watergate Bay Hotel, on Friday evening there is an Argentine Asado on the beach – this is a ticketed section of the weekend, tickets cost £60 per person and include live music, fireworks and plenty of food from the wood fired BBQ – and if that’s not enough to tempt you, there will also be Jugs of Aspall cyder and Champagne Jacquart on arrival!

During the day on Saturday the Segway sessions and polo continue and the food traders will also be there all day. There are two performances from the Propeller dance crew, a horse jousting display and event poster signing with Becky Bettesworth. All of this is before the main event of the weekend the ASPALL trophy match.

During the evening on Saturday there will be a trophy presentation followed by a beach party featuring live music from, Ruarri Joseph and William the Conqueror, the Andy Quick Band and Molotov Jukebox . Tickets are £25 each, for the evening entertainment.

Last but definitely not least, finishing off this brilliant weekend, there is a family fun dog show on Sunday. Judging starts at 10.30am and the classes are open to all abilities and ages.

The classes are as follows…

1. Best pedigree 2. Best mixed breed 3. Best puppy ( 4 to 12 months) 4. Best veteran (7 years plus) 5. Most handsome dog 6. Prettiest bitch 7. Waggiest tail 8. Best child handler 9. Dog the judge would like to take home 10. Best rescue (from any rescue) 11. Best in show 12. Reserve best in show

Class entry is £2 per dog and all money raised is in aid of the wonderful local charity St. Francis Home for Animals.

Other than the ticketed sessions, this three day event is free. Well behaved dogs are permitted on the beach, but must be kept on leads. Parking is readily available.
